Specialised liposuction equipment is then inserted through this opening to first break down localised fat deposits before suctioning them out of the body, thereby achieving targeted fat reduction.
To illustrate, it's akin to inserting a syringe into your thigh and drawing out the excess fat. Note: this is merely an analogy. Liposuction is performed using proper surgical instruments, not a large syringe!
In essence, there are four primary liposuction techniques. Allow me to briefly outline them:
The first is suction-assisted liposuction. This constitutes the most fundamental method, upon which all other liposuction techniques are built. Its principle involves first injecting a tumescent solution to dilute the fat, then using negative pressure to uniformly extract the diluted fat.
The second is water-jet assisted liposuction. This method involves injecting a tumescent solution to dilute the fat while simultaneously performing liposuction. It saves time, reduces physical exertion for the surgeon, and extracts fat in a more intact state, which can be reused for procedures like breast augmentation or buttock enhancement.
The third is ultrasound-assisted liposuction. Also built upon suction-assisted liposuction, this technique uses ultrasound to emulsify the fat before extraction. The thermal effect of the ultrasound also helps tighten the skin.
The fourth method is fibre-optic lipolysis. Laser energy is delivered via fibre optics to the subcutaneous layer through heat transfer, dissolving fat deposits beneath the skin. This approach certainly sounds rather sophisticated.
Although liposuction is highly prevalent within the cosmetic surgery industry and the technique is well-established, posing little challenge for reputable hospitals and experienced practitioners, numerous unregulated beauty salons and studios tend to embellish the procedure to attract clientele, contributing to market confusion.
Several years ago, a shocking photograph emerged from a private liposuction session: a tattooed, gold-chain-wearing individual with dyed brown hair was crouched on a hotel bed, performing thigh liposuction on a woman using a long syringe.
It is precisely because many have been misled by the advertising of unregulated studios and salons that numerous individuals underestimate the safety risks of liposuction. This has enabled a whole host of unscrupulous ‘doctors’ to roam freely with syringes, making a quick buck. Therefore, even if you are considering liposuction, you must seek information from a reputable hospital and never undergo the procedure in places like hotels or basements.
So, can liposuction actually help you lose weight?
Firstly, liposuction can indeed achieve localised fat reduction in a short timeframe. However, undergoing the procedure does not equate to successful weight loss. While it may improve your localised contours, your overall weight will see little change. This is because fat is bulky yet lightweight – much like a pile of cotton wool that appears substantial but is surprisingly easy to lift.
Typically, losing three to four pounds through liposuction is considered satisfactory. Therefore, for those aiming to shed over 20 pounds, achieving this solely through liposuction is fundamentally impossible. For instance, a woman standing 1.6 metres tall and weighing 130 pounds who wishes to reach 110 or 100 pounds must first create an energy deficit through diet and exercise to reduce her overall weight. If, after losing weight, certain areas still prove unsatisfactory and require sculpting, then minor fat removal might be considered. However, personally, I believe that if you genuinely manage to shed over 20 jin, every part of your body will naturally slim down. At that point, you'll likely have no desire for liposuction at all.
Secondly, liposuction is not a permanent solution. If post-operative dietary management is neglected—indulging daily in hotpot, barbecues, or spicy stews—accumulating fat will soon restore the treated areas to their original state.
Let us also address several notable drawbacks of liposuction.
First, as a surgical procedure, it must be performed at accredited hospitals, making costs inevitably substantial. Even budget options typically start at tens of thousands of yuan, while reputable hospitals with skilled surgeons command significantly higher fees. Moreover, significant time and effort are required both before and after the procedure, factors that must be factored into the overall consideration.
Additionally, liposuction only removes subcutaneous fat, and this reduction in fat merely results in a modest decrease in body weight. One might ask: if the fat in my body is reduced, won't that make me healthier?
